Key Characteristics of Selvol PVOH 205
Selvol PVOH 205 is produced at approximately 88 mol% hydrolysis, the defining parameter for everything downstream. At that level, the polymer retains a meaningful proportion of acetate groups along its backbone. This offers distinct performance aspects:
- Increases surface activity
- Drives strong compatibility with polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and other vinyl ester emulsion systems
- Produces a softer, more flexible dry film than fully hydrolyzed grades
Fully hydrolyzed PVOH trends toward brittleness and can struggle with adhesion on nonpolar or synthetic substrates; Selvol PVOH 205 avoids both problems. Partially hydrolyzed grades also dissolve and desize more readily at lower temperatures. That’s a process and energy advantage that compounds at production scale.
On viscosity, Selvol PVOH 205 runs approximately 5.2–6.2 cP in a 4% aqueous solution at 20°C, placing it firmly in the low-viscosity tier of the Selvol PVOH line.

1. Wood and Paper-Converting Adhesives
Wood and paper-converting adhesives make up the largest application category for Selvol PVOH 205, where it functions as a protective colloid in PVAc emulsion systems.
The problem. PVAc emulsion adhesives need a stabilizing agent during polymerization, or the dispersion separates, loses shelf life and fails freeze-thaw cycling. Without the right protective colloid, formulators also lose open time and risk weak, uneven glue lines.
What Selvol PVOH 205 solves. As a protective colloid, it wraps PVAc particles during emulsion polymerization and stabilizes the resulting dispersion. Its partial hydrolysis means it wets paper substrates effectively and builds tack quickly. Its low viscosity keeps high-solids formulations pumpable and processable.

2. Packaging Adhesives
Selvol PVOH 205 serves several distinct packaging adhesive segments, from label application to flexible film lamination.
The problem. Labeling and lamination adhesives that fail at speed cost converters real money. You risk poor anchorage on labels, yellowing laminate films or adhesives that set up too fast on hot, high-speed lines.

3. Building and Construction Emulsions
Selvol PVOH 205’s compatibility with PVAc and other emulsion systems carries naturally into construction chemistry, especially in redispersible polymer powders.
The problem. Dry-mix mortar and plaster products need a polymer powder that redisperses cleanly on the job site. Powders that agglomerate or contribute weak final bond strength once mixed undermine tile adhesion, leveling performance and crew confidence in the product.
What Selvol PVOH 205 solves. As the protective colloid in spray-dried redispersible polymer powders (RDPs), it keeps the powder free-flowing in storage and redisperses cleanly when crews add water.

4. Remoistenable Adhesive Systems
Partially hydrolyzed PVOH grades are the material of choice for remoistenable adhesives: Selvol PVOH 205 is a standout in this category.
The problem. Remoistenable adhesives have to dry to a stable, non-tacky film and then reactivate fully and evenly the moment they’re rewetted. Uneven reactivation means cold spots, weak seals and seal failures downstream.
What Selvol PVOH 205 solves. Partially hydrolyzed PVOH grades are the go-to materials for remoistenable systems. This grade’s film-forming characteristics ensure the dried film reactivates evenly across the bond line under an activation wand. The film has no cold spots or patchy wet-out.

5. Specialty Paper Coatings
Paper coating rewards low-viscosity grades, and Selvol PVOH 205 is suited to both pigment coating and barrier coating roles.
The problem. Coating lines run fast, and rheology has to stay tight. A viscosity spike at the coater head means downtime and wasted substrate. On the performance side, weak barrier coatings let oil, grease and oxygen through, ruining shelf life and print quality.
What Selvol PVOH 205 solves. Its low viscosity keeps coating lines running cleanly at speed. As a barrier coating component, PVOH’s hydrogen-bonding network forms an effective oxygen and grease barrier.
Research in paper and packaging science consistently shows partially hydrolyzed PVOH outperforms fully hydrolyzed grades here. This is due to a more flexible, pinhole-minimizing film at standard coat weights.

6. Synthetic Textile Sizing
Textile sizing is one of PVOH’s oldest industrial uses: Selvol PVOH 205 remains valuable here, especially for synthetic and blended yarns.
The problem. Synthetic and blended yarns are hard to size well. A size film that doesn’t bond to nonpolar fiber surfaces flakes and sheds during high-speed weaving, causing breaks and downtime.
A film that doesn’t desize cleanly leaves residue that compromises dyeing and finishing.
What Selvol PVOH 205 solves. Partially hydrolyzed PVOH adheres more strongly to polyester and other synthetic fibers than fully hydrolyzed grades. Its greater residual acetate content makes this adhesion possible.
That produces a size film that stays put through abrasive loom operation. Reduced crystallinity lets the film release cleanly during hot-water wash-off.

Selvol PVOH 205’s versatility extends into an array of smaller but commercially meaningful industrial applications.
The problem. A long tail of industrial processes need a binder or film-former that’s strong enough to hold things together temporarily, then disappear cleanly. It needs to do so without leaving residue, complicating downstream processing or failing under heat.
