Selvol PVOH Grade Families at a Glance
Selvol PVOH performance depends primarily on the relationship between the degree of hydrolysis and the viscosity (molecular weight). Use these summaries to align grade specifications with your specific process requirements.

Degree of Hydrolysis
Hydrolysis levels determine the chemical resistance and solubility profile of each Selvol PVOH grade:
- Super and fully hydrolyzed grades (98.0% to 99.3%+). These products maximize water resistance and gas barrier properties for high-performance films.
- Intermediate and partially hydrolyzed grades (87.0% to 96.0%). These grades enhance solubility in cooler water and improve adhesion to diverse surfaces.
Viscosity Range
Viscosity specifications indicate the molecular weight of the polymer and influence the PVOH film’s final strength:
- Low-viscosity grades. These products enable high-solids formulations and ensure easier handling in pumping and coating operations.
- High-viscosity grades. Higher molecular weight grades increase the system’s overall film strength, toughness and cohesive integrity.
Fine Particle (S-Grades)
Fine particle S-grades provide a reduced particle size to facilitate rapid dispersion and consistent dissolution. This form minimizes lumping and reduces the time required to achieve a uniform solution in specialized dry-blending or solution-based processes.
Specialty Polymerization Grades
These grades provide the specific colloidal stability required for vinyl and related polymerization systems. They allow you to maintain precise control over particle size distribution and porosity in the production of PVC and other resins.
Specialty Textile Grades
SEKISUI engineers specialty textile grades to optimize warp sizing and related high-speed textile processes. These products use tuned viscosity and hydrolysis ranges to improve weaving efficiency by providing superior abrasion resistance and film flexibility.
Tackified Selvol Grades
Tackified Selvol grades incorporate specific components to increase adhesion strength for high-speed industrial bonding. They offer high wet tack for demanding applications like tube winding and paperboard laminating where immediate bond strength is critical.
Selvol PVOH Solutions
Selvol PVOH solutions provide ready-to-use solutions at defined solids ranges to ensure batch-to-batch consistency. These products eliminate the need for on-site dissolution equipment and reduce the risk of processing errors during solution preparation.
