How Do You Test Impact Strength?
In sum, impact strength is a material’s ability to withstand a suddenly applied mechanical load. Interestingly, impact strength tests commonly use the Charpy and the IZOD specimen configuration.
The main differences between the IZOD and Charpy impact tests are the position of the specimen and the type of notches.
Here’s how the tests differ.
First, set the sample under the machine and rotate the hammer to the swing position:
- In the IZOD test, position the specimen vertically, with the notch facing the hammer.
- In the Charpy test, position the specimen horizontally, with the notch facing away from the hammer.
In North America, CPVC pipe and fitting applications typically undergo the IZOD test method.

What is drop impact strength? Essentially, drop impact strength measures a material’s ability to withstand external damage, such as damage during transportation or from falling or dropping at a jobsite.
